My ForTwo Smart car is left hand drive and subsequently failed its MOT because the headlights need to be converted for UK regulations.
I have been quoted over 拢500 for the job, but surely there must be a cheaper alternative? I have heard about stickers that can be used but is that all that is required?
Any info, Bristol garages or website links would be really great!
Thanks!|||Masking kits are acceptable for MOT purposes and will get the car through the test.
However...
Even though it'll pass the MOT the law states that GB registered vehicles must have lights that deflect the beam in the correct direction (for right hand drive cars its to the left) and this must be a permanent feature, i.e. no masking kits. The masking kit allowance was primarily included in the MOT for cars visiting here from abroad so the owners didn't have to go to the expense and trouble of changing the lenses for a temporary stay. The manual however gives no stipulation that these kits are only to be used on non-GB vehicles.
So basically you can use a masking kit to get it to pass the MOT but this is literally just a temporary solution and new lenses will have to be fitted eventually to prevent a pull from the police.|||The Smart cars have headlights that are EXTREMELY DIFFICULT to get to for any work at all. Unlike most cars these are not designed for easy DIY maintenance at the front end.
It can take over an hour to even change a single headlight bulb. If you want to take one out then you are looking at several hours work for each light. It's possible to do it yourself but you will need to be very flexible, risk backache and you'll need a handbook for instructions. That is why the garage has quoted you 拢500 to replace the pair of them.
You must replace the headlights so that the dip beam tips to the left. If you don't then you'll be dazzling oncoming drivers at night and always getting flashed at. You will also fail the MOT - plastic stick on "converters" are not acceptable, they're only intended for temporary use when you're visiting abroad.
There are SMART specialists in Bristol and Yate. Plenty are on Google. eg www.smartofbristol.co.uk|||Some modern cars have a screw point that allows you to easily switch between left and right hand drive. You might want to find out if your model and year of car falls into this category as it would cost you nothing and be easy and quick to achieve.|||I used a pair similar to this in Italy last year, worked fine.|||Look in scrapyards, Ebay etc for a secondhand set.|||you could get the lights your self and fit them it`s not a hard job and will save you 拢拢拢拢拢
